Dream Job & 2011

Since September, I've been seriously thinking about my career. Some of it has to do with the fact that I know I'm severely underpaid. Even though there's the potential for a "small raise" come April per recent a recent discussion with my boss... I've become restless at my current position. I feel a bit stagnant and while I'm constantly asking for more work and trying to always be a sponge, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. What I do is somewhat specialized in the investment industry, and I wasn't sure if it was a career path I truly wanted but it has definitely been interesting. So I started casually job hunting just to see if there were any similar positions at all out there.

A few weeks ago, while I was home for Thanksgiving... I stumbled upon my dream job. In my dream city: New York!

I applied, figuring I'd never hear back as with most job applications. Lo-and-behold, FOUR days later, I received a call for an interview! An initial phone interview was scheduled and in my mind, I had already started moved myself to New York City...

But it's unfortunately been radio silence for over a week now. They had sounded very interested, asked if I'd be available in the near future for an in-person interview and said they would contact me. The only issue seemed to be the start date which was MUCH sooner than I could have anticipated. There was unfortunately no way I would be able to make that date work with my upcoming travel schedule plus obviously having to do a huge, cross-country relocation.

SIGH.

Regardless, that interview gave me the push I needed. My casual job hunt has turned into a full-blown, time-consuming endeavor with one goal in mind:

In 2011, I want to move to New York.

Yes yes yes, I love this! Trust me, do whatever it takes to make it happen... you can only regret what you don't try!

And I'm a firm believer in applying for any job you're even slightly qualified for. Even if you don't think you're qualified, if you want the job, apply. The employer may not get any totally qualified applicants, or something may really stand out on your resume...

OMG, I'm so excited for your new goal! :D

YAY! That is so exciting! This happened to me a few years ago when I was obsessed with moving to Vancouver. It took a while to find the right job for me, but I eventually made the move and have been happy! :)

Congrats!!!!!!!!

It's great setting a new direction and embarking on it.

I'm with LC, apply for everything even remotely appropriate - it cannot hurt. Even if they don't look at your app or marvel at your audacity...what's the worst? You'll never know, they're behind a computer across the country!

Congrats on this big decision... I'm always struck by how much our lives seem to parallel because this year I'm def changing jobs too! :)

Wow sounds great! A very exciting life change, for sure!
I don't know about this, because I haven't been on an interview in a long time, but could you call them to ask about how the process is going? I know my mom used to say that could be good because it shows your interest in them... of course that was in high school so I could be WAY off, haha.

Wow, good for you! Hopefully everything will line up perfectly for it (I'm sure it will though).

Just found the blog and I'm feeling I could learn a lot from you! Haha.

As for New York- I live here and while I love it, jobs are extremely competitive (as you have noticed) and rent can be very steep. But if you can work it into your life and budget, you will not regret it!

LOVE IT. Living in NYC is a dream that I have had since I was a little girl, and I hope you make it!

I say, you should definitely call and/or email and keep following up. Also, if you get a formal rejection letter or call or email, you should write them a thank you for the consideration. And keep in touch periodically. It seems like overkill but it does work sometimes.

I <3 NYC!! Super excited that I found your blog…. I’m really enjoying it so far. Good luck with the follow up interview. Everything happens the way it should…so don’t worry to much about the ‘how’…. but I’ll be rooting for your dream job in your dream city!

I know EXACTLY how you feel ... I'm severely underpaid as well, but the problem is that I work as an executive assistant to two power brokers and I low-balled what I wanted for my salary in order to land the job. But I want to keep this job until I finish a novel (which I want to do this year) and then we'll see what happens...but it's hard having a job where you know you're valued, but the head honcho can't seem to reconcile that.
