Vacuum Cleaner

I need to buy a vacuum cleaner.

Our entire apartment (3-story townhouse) is completely carpeted and it is getting rather filthy. I've been putting off buying one since a) I do not know anything about vacuum cleaners except how to use them and b) it is a fairly expensive purchase.

My budget is $150. I would rather buy a reliable brand and get a few more years of use out of it than get a $50 one and have it break/not work after a year or two.

I am looking for something that is bag-less, works extremely well on carpet and has an attachable piece for stairs. (We have a lot of those.)

Do you have any suggestions?

I got one about 1.5 years ago similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Eureka-4870GZ-Smart-Vac-Upright-Vacuum/dp/B0009WRKSY (mine is blue).

I hate vacuuming, so it hasn't gotten a lot of use, haha. Like you, I felt it would be better to get one that lasts.

I looked at consumer reports to choose mine and bought one they recommended as a good deal. You could look there (my dad has an online subscription I used) or just go by online reviews.

Hey there, this is the first time I've come to your blog, and it looks great! You sound quite similar to me - I also ran up my credit card debts thanks to an addiction to travel, and good food is one thing that i just can't bring myself to scrimp on, no matter how frugal I'm trying to be!

I bought a vacuum cleaner last year, the important thing is to make sure you get one that is for carpets, as they need much more power than if you were just using it for floor boards etc. Check the reviews on amazon.

I'm going to keep reading along :)

Our current vacuum falls into the $50 category so it's not something I'd recommend.

Maybe check out consumer reports, amazon, or epinions. If you'd like to borrow my CR log on send me an email.

I know it is way beyond your budget, but a good vacuum cleaner is a fabulous investment that will also save you time. It's faster to vacuum with a nice one that doesn't lose suction, as opposed to one where you keep running it over the same spot and still not picking everything up.

If you decide to take the plunge, Dysons live up to the hype. We have the Dyson Animal, and it is just amazing.

I have a dyson and I LOVE IT. They are more than your budget, but maybe you could find one on craigs list?
